It’s Betty’s turn on American tube

Before the Devil wore Prada, before Bridget Jones’ diary was widely read, there was Betty. Known to Spanish-speaking TV viewers as the smart, spunky heroine of Yo soy Betty, la fea, this originally Colombian telenovela story line has been produced in several other countries, including Germany, Russia, and the Netherlands.

Actress/producer Salma Hayek unveils the English-language comedy at 8 p.m. Friday nights on ABC. Ugly Betty stars America Ferrera (Real Women Have Curves) as the hard-working, intelligent young woman hired by a publishing mogul to help his womanizing son manage a fashion magazine. The two unlikely partners are forced to watch each others’ backs as others seek to make sure they fail.
