CPLC HONORS PIONEERS
Chicanos Por La Causa in Tucson honored Spanish-language media pioneers at its annual dinner. Tucson journalists honored included Leyla Cattan, a television host and former Arizona Daily Star columnist; Ernesto Portillo, who created Spanish-language radio shows and a station in a career spanning more than 40 years; and Raul E. Aguirre, a former Univision producer and pioneer of bilingual, Chicano radio. Aguirre is now president/owner of REA Communications, a Hispanic-owned media & marketing agency in Tucson and Phoenix.
Deceased journalists honored were Henry and Tony Villegas, who created Mexican Theater, a TV program seen on Sunday mornings in many Tucson Mexican-American homes; Don Jacinto Orozco, creator of the popular La Hora de Café show; Spanish-language advertising pioneers Raúl Gamez Bogarin and his sister, Bertha Gamez, both of whom worked in radio and TV; and Josie Celaya Velarde, who as a teenager was one of the first female Spanish-language radio announcers.
