ASU shoots down stereotypes online
They were the original Latino rebels with a causa. Some were real; some only existed on reels.
The ASU Hispanic Research Center and the Arizona Humanities Council have created a Web site called "Bold Caballeros and Noble Banditos."
The site features thought-provoking and stereotype-busting information about real-life banditos fighting society such as Juan Murrieta, Gregorio Cortez, and of course, Pancho Villa. It also celebrates entertainment characters such as Zorro, the Cisco Kid, Anita Delgado (the Avenging Angel) and cartoon characters such as the Frito Bandito and Speedy Gonzales.
"Bold Caballeros seeks to capture or recapture the image of the ‘good-bad’ Hispanic bandit, and to contrast her or him with the degenerate …simple ‘bad’ Hispanic bandits," says Gary Keller of the Hispanic Research Center.
