Weak economy takes toll on yet another Valley media company

RMG Marketing Group, formerly known as Results Marketing Group Inc., closed its doors after 16 years in Phoenix as a soft economy continues to take its toll on the local media.
The firm’s 15-member staff was notified Aug. 18 by Boston parent company Mercury Media Holdings, which said it no longer will offer traditional services, which were the specialty of the Phoenix office. Its clients, which include IHOP, KASW-TV (Ch. 6) and KTVK-TV (Ch. 3), were not be retained.
Elsewhere:
• Last month, the East Valley Tribune’s parent company, Freedom Communications Inc., of Irvine, Calif., filed for U.S. Bankruptcy Court protection from its creditors under Chapter 11. The Tribune publishes three days a week (Wednesday, Friday and Sunday). Freedom also asked a bankruptcy judge to allow it to hire a broker to pursue the possible sale of its Phoenix-area properties, including the Tribune.
• In July, the Arizona Republic laid off 100 employees , including about 20 in the newsroom. The move came as parent company Gannett eliminated about 1,400 jobs at its daily newspapers across the country.
• In June, Phoenix-based Arvizu Advertising & Promotions Inc., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Its clients include McDonald’s, Wells Fargo, SRP, and Bashas’ Food City. Arvizu has been in business since 1991.
