Juana Molina new CD, Un Día

Brave, new Dia

“One day I will sing the songs with no lyrics and everyone can imagine for themselves if it’s about love, disappointment, banalities or about Plato. Un Día (one day).”

Juana Molina, lyrics to title song of new CD, Un Día

Argentinean composer/musician Juana Molina is one of the most imaginative music makers in the industry.  Un Día is her fourth release on Domino Records, and again she has crafted an album that is a must-have for your CD collection.  Daughter of a famous Tango singer and an actress, Juana left behind a career as a star on a successful TV series in South America to isolate her eclectic concept of what music should be and do. Un Día was composed and recorded entirely by Juana at her home outside Buenos Aires. Latino Perspectives caught up with her and asked a few questions.

LPM: We, like many of your loyal, growing audience, with each new release look for even more innovation from a Juana Molina CD. Do you feel that pressure?

JM: Sometimes. I feel, of course that I can’t just record whatever comes to my mind without checking if I have something too similar in a previous record already. Even though I know I will never be able to do something totally different. It’ll always be me!

LPM: How much of your music and vocals are improvised during the taping?

JM: Almost everything is improvised. Then I just cut the parts I don’t like or shorten them if necessary. If something has a “leader personality,” then I may repeat it more often.

LPM: You are touring with Swedish guitarist Jose Gonzales in London, and the Canadian band Feist in the U.S.A. Are their audiences compatible for your music?

JM: I don’t know about the music. I wouldn’t say they are opposite, but they aren’t much alike. Yes, I think the audiences are what we could have in common. People can just like all sorts of styles, I guess, as I do.

LPM: Thank you, Juana.

JM: You’re welcome. Cheers!
