Los numeros hablan (numbers tell it)
Univision viewers top debate charts
By Staff
Television industry experts were predicting about 1.5 million — or fewer — viewers would tune in Univision’s Spanish-language, Democratic presidential debate last month. The results raised the eyebrows of politics watchers: An impressive 4.6 million people tuned in.
Compare that with 4.3 million combined viewers for the presidential debates on ABC, CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC combined; fewer than 1 million for MSNBC’s Democratic debate in August, to 3.1 million for Fox News’ Republican debate in New Hampshire.
The numbers are an acknowledgement of the growing strength of the Latino vote. Some 16 million Latinos will be eligible to vote in the presidential elections.
The Univision debate drew almost 50 percent more viewers among adults ages 25 to 54 than watched the English-language debates.
One news report said the numbers demonstrate “Hispanics are just as eager and invested in next year’s election as any other audience.”
