UA, ASU break enrollment records

Two state universities reported record enrollment numbers this fall.

The University of Arizona has set records in total enrollment numbers, first-year retention rates, freshman class size and student diversity. Total student enrollment has reached 37,217, with 29,070 students making up the undergraduate population, both record-breaking numbers.

A record 30 percent of all freshmen are from minority backgrounds, making the class of 2011 the largest and one of the most diverse in the history of the UA.

The numbers of African American, Native American and Hispanic freshmen reached record levels. Considering both undergraduate and graduate enrollment, the UA also has the largest total number of Hispanic students in its history with 5,431.

Arizona State University has reached a record 64,394 students, with all four ASU locations experiencing increases.

The freshman minority student enrollment continues to rise, with a 9 percent increase over last year. Latinos experienced the largest gain among ethnic minorities, increasing by 15 percent over last year. Thirty-three percent of the resident freshman class is made up of students of color.
