A Maricopa Community Colleges program was one of two programs nationwide honored as Examples of Excelencia by Excelencia in Education, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organization that works toward accelerating higher education success for Latino students.
MCC's Achieving a College Education is a high school/college enrollment scholarship program that targets at-risk students who generally do not consider attending college. Counseling, scholarships and other methods of support are key to the program. The award was based on the program's success, indicated through increased high school graduation rates and higher grade point averages.
A similar program at the University of Texas at El Paso was also honored with the award.
