Catch the BUZZ

Pachangas at Arizona art museums and performance theaters are the hot happenings for the fashionably hip.

The trend started in 2000, when the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, or SMoCA, started presenting eclectic events featuring theme music, eats, drinks and fashion shows.

Other venues, such as the Phoenix Art Museum and the Herberger Theater downtown, started offering similar doings to attract a younger and more diverse crowd.

On Thursday, Nov. 3, SMoCa presents  BUZZ: Fall SMoCA Nights, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. BUZZ brings together Valley artists, fashion designers, musicians and performers for an evening of cutting-edge culture.

Highlights include the band Wicked Children, a collective of 10 jazz musicians "exploring the work of Radiohead from a different perspective"; live art by Alpha Monster art collective; DJs Maji and Mr. P-body; a 'Noir' fashion-themed runway show; and Tarot readings.

If that's not enough to excite, attendees can actually experience the art. On view at SMoCA are four fall exhibitions: Tea and Coffee Towers, southwestNET: Monique Prieto, Pay Attention: Bruce Nauman videos from the Collection of Barbara Balkin Cottle and Robert Cottle and Private Pictures: photography from Arizona collections.

The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art is at 7374 E. Second St. in Scottsdale, Advance tickets are recommended: $10 for SMoCA members; $15 nonmembers. Call 480-994-ARTS.
