The Virgin de Guadalupe gets an operatic treatment, Arizona-style

Diva Guadalupe
The story of The Virgin of Guadalupe gets an operatic, Arizona twist in the world premiere of Guadalupe, Our Lady of the Roses. Arizona composer James DeMars based the new opera on the appearances of Our Lady of Guadalupe to the Mexican-Indian Juan Diego.  The two-act opera will be presented as a concert featuring internationally recognized singers Isola Jones (mezzo-soprano) as Our Lady of Guadalupe and Robert Breault (tenor) as Juan Diego.

ASU faculty vocalists Carole Fitzpatrick (soprano) and Robert Barefield (bass) will add their talents as La Malinche and Bishop Zumarraga. Native American flutist R. Carlos Nakai will serve as the main musical soloist with Father Jorge Rodriguez Eagar as cantor. DeMars will conduct the Guadalupe Festival Orchestra & Chorus, an ensemble of ASU faculty, advanced students, and members of the ASU Symphonic Chorale and Sun Valley Chorale. The new opera debuts on May 16-17 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 322 N. Horne in Mesa. Tickets are $20, $15 for students.
