'28 Weeks Later,' nails may grow back

28 Weeks Later, the sequel to the Fox Atomic thriller 28 Days Later

Yikes! First it was The Hills Have Eyes II, which featured Latino actor Jacob Vargas. Then in April came director Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror.

It's not over yet, according to publicity for 28 Weeks Later, the sequel to the Fox Atomic thriller 28 Days Later, in which Great Britain succumbs to a fast-moving virus that turns people into murderous zombies.

This time it is the Americans' turn, as the U.S. sends troops and civilians over to England to "eradicate, sterilize and repopulate."

As the first wave of refugees return a family is reunited, but one of them unwittingly carries a horrible secret: the virus is not yet dead, and it proves more dangerous than ever.

Robert Carlyle, Harold Perrineau, and Catherine McCormack lead the cast, which includes Imogen Poots and 12-year-old Mackintosh Muggleton.

The movie is directed by Spaniard Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, a native of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. An Oscar nominee at age 25 for his 1997 short comedy Linked (Esposados), Fresnadillo has also won the 2002 Goya Award as best new director for the full-length thriller Intacto.

It might be tough to remember Fresnadillo's film pedigree as you watch the bio-horror pic, but chewing fingernails comes with the territory.

28 Weeks Later opens May 11.
