Resumes, writing tips, grants and more

KEYS TO RESUME WRITING
Glendale Community College
will offer a free resume writing workshop May 9, at 6000 W. Olive Ave., Glendale, in room CCS 108. This one-hour session will include instruction on how to format and develop an effective resume, how to use a resume, how to focus on accomplishments and the key do’s and don’ts of writing a resume that will grab potential employers.

WRITING TIPS WORKSHOP
The Phoenix College Creative Writing Program will offer May Microburst, a creative writing conference in celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the Phoenix College Creative Writing Program, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 6, at 1202 W. Thomas Road.

This dynamic conference will focus on the importance of writing time and how to submit work for publication.

Publishing professionals will present panels and individual workshops plus share their expertise. Scheduled speakers include mystery writer Betty Webb, author Stella Pope Duarte and best-selling author Diana Gabaldon.

STUDY ABROAD IN MEXICO
Pack your bags and get ready for a learning adventure in Mexico! Phoenix College’s foreign language department will offer a unique study abroad program in Cuernavaca, Mexico June 16-30.

Participants will stay in private homes with families and take Spanish conversation and culture classes. All classes will be held at the Center for Bilingual Multicultural Studies/Universidad Internacional in the city of Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico. Students and community members with an interest in the culture and new experiences are welcome to apply.

SPORTS CAMP FOR KIDS
The Chandler-Gilbert Community College athletic department will offer a four-day sports camp at the college’s Williams Campus, 7460 E. Texas Ave., Mesa, for children ages 5 to 15, June 5 - 8.

CGCC head coaches and their athletes will teach fundamentals and skills for various sports, including golf, soccer, baseball/softball, volleyball and basketball. Cost is $80 per child, and the camp is limited to the first 100 children. Registration deadline is May 31. For information, call (480) 732-7073.


STUDENTS RECEIVE HISPANIC GRANTS
The National Hispanic American Educational Fund recently announced 13 Phoenix-area winners were recipients of its educational grants totaling $36,000.

The National Hispanic American Educational Fund is a nonprofit organization that provides opportunities and funding for educational programs and/or vocational training for Hispanic Americans.

The winners and their respective high schools are: Carlos A. Solorio, Metro Tech High School; Rocky Canelas, Gilbert High School; Julissa Leal, Westwood High School; Jesus Pacheco, Trevor Browne High School; Nieves Montano, Independence High School; Isabelle Villasano, Maryvale High School; Angie Coquelet, Xavier College Preparatory; Camilia Tapernoux, Marcos De Niza High School; Luz Osuna, Glendale High School; Elizabeth Ruiz, Mesa High School; Nicole Serrano, Fountain Hills High School; Alessa Aguayo, Hamilton High School and Edlin Gonzalez, Mesa Skyline High School.
