Helios gives large endowment

The Helios Education Foundation recently awarded $6.5 million to the Translational Genomics Research Institute for an annual summer internship program for 45 high school, university undergraduate and graduate students in Arizona.

The hope is to cultivate new scientific and technical talent across the state of Arizona. Interns will receive a stipend and be paired with a TGen scientist/mentor for eight weeks. They will work on research projects on topics as diverse as cancer, diabetes, autism and Alzheimer’s disease.

The Phoenix-based nonprofit foundation was established in 2004, and supports initiatives that encourage participation, increase access and enrich the learning experience leading to the successful completion of post-secondary education for Arizona and Florida residents.
