‘Green’ building in Tolleson project

The Tolleson City Council is seeing “green.” The council unanimously approved a zoning change that paves the way for the 20-acre Tolleson Towne Center at 91st Avenue and McDowell Road. Developers will request that a 205,000-square-foot office building that will be part of the Center be certified platinum, the highest ranking by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System. The building would have energy-efficient mechanical and lighting systems, horizontal shade projections to shield windows from the sun, roof overhangs on all sides of the building, vertical fins for more shade, and high-performance reflective glass. Also, part of the building will be powered by photovoltaic cells while water-efficient plumbing fixtures and a high percentage of recycled construction materials will be incorporated into the design. Besides the five-story office building, plans include an upscale five-story hotel and retail space. The Center may be completed by the end of 2009. For more, www.tollesonaz.org.
