UNFAIR REPORTING
I recently bought the latest issue of Latino Perspectives Magazine January 2007, Arizona Edition.
I bought this issue for a certain article, an article that I found to be quite unimpressive. I don't agree on how your so- called "reporter" wrote the article Financial twists and tucks/American Latino families struggle to find ways to support their amateur athletes.
Ruben Hernandez wrote with the equivalency of a freshman in high school. As a senior at Westwood High School, I didn't appreciate how your "journalist" described Jose Benavides. He portrayed Jose as this completely poor little Mexican boy who struggles in life, school and sports. Jose's mother, Marisela, may have some financial struggles, but I don't feel that was fair to Jose or Marisela, how Mr. Ruben Hernandez addressed the matter. He simply wrote about their financial struggle, which I understand that the article was about Latino families struggling to support their children in sports. What I don't understand is why he didn't write about how on Jose's last report card averaged a 4.1 grade point average, or that he was accepted into NAU and ASU.
Mr. Hernandez felt it more substantial to write about how Jose's mother's income as a "maintenance worker" or that they live in a mobile home. Frankly, being a Latina myself, I feel ashamed that a Latino journalist would politely put another Latino youth down for bettering himself by any means.
Maybe Ruben Hernandez's article was strictly finances, but many persons found it to be inconsiderate and disrespectful.

RECONNECTING
Hey, Marcos Najera!
I have been meaning to write for several months (read: New Year's resolution- drop Marcos a line). I know you from Alhambra High School and I've been enjoying your column every month! I live in Tucson with my husband and two kids and we always read your column first when Latino Perspectives arrives and have a great laugh.
I belly-laughed over the "Costco-Loco" comment a few months ago and also enjoyed reading about your sister last month, as I definitely remember her as well - I even somehow knew it was a big deal back then that she went to Columbia (hope I got that right).
If you come to Tucson to visit "The Joint," give me a call! Good luck with your fitness makeover!
