Sunnyslope teen wins Pastor art contest

Sunnyslope High School sophomore Troy Thomas recently was named winner of Congressman Ed Pastor’s Fourth Congressional District Art Competition.

He was recognized in a ceremony for his drawing entitled Our Angel. Thomas’ art will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year and he will be flown to Washington, D.C., for a special ceremony June 25. He will also receive a scholarship from the Art Institute of Phoenix. Second place went to Justin Ayala, a junior at Apollo High School. Third place was awarded to Juan Marzeleno, a sophomore at Trevor Browne High School.

Ten pieces by nine students, including another piece by Troy Thomas, received Honorable Mentions. Those students included: Erika Hernandez, Mercedes Kincade, Steven Born, DesJean Bauer for two pieces, Chavonique Poole, Pedro Uriarte, Alejandro Corona and Marc Arvallo. Students who placed or received honorable mention also received a scholarship from the Art Institute of Phoenix.
