Once a dream, closer to reality

A Senate bill proposes a National Museum of the American Latino

A measure calling for a National Museum of the American Latino which U.S. Congressman Javier Becerra of California has pushed for the past five years recently was passed by the U.S. Senate. The bill is headed for the White House for President George Bush’s signature. “I believe we must celebrate the diversity of our nation, and Latinos have been a significant part of American history,” says Senator Ken Salazar of Colorado, who also supported the proposal. “The bill would take the first step in commemorating the rich contributions of the Latino community to American life.” The bill sets up a 23-member commission responsible for convening a national conference on the Museum’s feasibility, a fundraising plan to create extensive public-private partnerships, and a plan of action taking the museum from concept to reality.
