''Illegal Immigration is just that - Illegal''

one-time guest columnist Sheriff Joe Arpaio slams Mayor Phil Gordon for accusing him of racial profiling

''Illegal Immigration is just that - Illegal''
In the May issue of Latino Perspectives we introduced a section of the magazine where members of the community could voice their own opinions of the world around them. To kick off the series, Mayor Phil Gordon wrote on immigration and his view of Joe Arpaio's activities of late (see related stories, at right). In this issue, Joe Arpaio responds to the Mayor's article.

Mayor slams Sheriff

Collateral Damage

Dan Saban to face Arpiao once again
Perhaps I see my job as an elected official differently than some other elected officials do.  My job as the Sheriff of Maricopa County is to represent the people I serve and secondly, as a law enforcement professional, to enforce all the laws enacted by the state legislature.  I cannot and will not arbitrarily decide which laws to enforce and which ones to ignore because it may be “politically popular” to do so.  That’s called selective law enforcement and it’s a bad idea.

Illegally entering the United States for any purpose is a crime.  It always has been. Whether a person is from Greece or Italy or Mexico or the planet Mars, the rule of law applies.  All who wish to come to the United States to live or work must comply with the government’s immigration regulations. Ask any one of the millions of immigrants who legally came to the U.S. whether they think it is fair that others now be allowed to come here illegally and face no penalty of law and the resounding answer will be “no!”

That’s what the Phoenix Mayor does not seem to understand. Phil Gordon panders to a vocal minority group of activists who want nothing more than to open our borders to all who wish to come here.  Sadly, he has made Phoenix a “sanctuary city” for illegal aliens.

He deplores the fact that I am upholding laws he does not agree with.  He would prefer me to turn a blind eye to those who violate our nation’s immigration laws.  I cannot. I will not.

Currently this Sheriff’s Office has the nation’s largest contingency of immigration trained law enforcement professionals.  One hundred sixty men and women dutifully enforce the laws that voters of this state and county asked to be enforced.

We are good people, doing very hard and dangerous work. We do not racially profile.  We do not target brown-skinned people with broken tail lights as Mayor Gordon constantly says about my deputies.  We have conducted crime suppression operations in Fountain Hills, Phoenix , Guadalupe, Aguila,  Queen Creek and soon we will make our way into Mesa.  We routinely contact the police departments prior to our operations to let them know of our plans.  Once there, we make traffic stops based on probable cause.  We cite or ticket those who commit a violation.  And many of those we come in contact with cannot produce any documentation to prove their residency status.  Many readily admit they are in the country illegally. Are we to ignore this violation of the law? If so, what other violations can or will we start ignoring?  Where do we draw the line?

Phil Gordon is wrong about so many things. He is not a police professional.  In fact, he knows very little about police work. That lack of knowledge leads him to make ridiculous and unfounded remarks in speeches and on national television in a vain attempt to discredit me and my organization.  I have called him a liar because that is what he is.  He throws out arrests statistics which are patently false and claims my office is personally responsible for serving 40,000 felony warrants. Most of those warrants originated with his city’s police department. Every police agency in Arizona is responsible for serving warrants.   Phil Gordon knows the truth about warrants and he knows the truth about my immigration operations but he also knows that telling the truth won’t put him in the headlines.

Apraio is nothing but a liar!

Phoenix police put real criminals in jail and, yes, while there are some that are undocumented, it is in fact the Phoenix police that put more undocumented people in tent city during regular policing than does the sheriff. The only difference between the Phoenix PD and the Sheriff is that when they (Police Dept) throw undocumented people in jail, they don't throw press conferences to show how tough they are on immigration.

This is how the public is being fooled into thinking that he (Arpaio)is the only one doing anything about immigration.

Voters of Maricopa County: The undocumented people that are in jail by the Phoenix police are the ones we all want in jail, the drug dealers, prostitutes or child molesters.. they were caught using real police work.. not this racial profiling of old trucks as Apraio mentions, or pulling people over for broken tail lights to catch a bus boy. That is not real police work.

We need a Law man - not a show man, we need change!

I can't wait until election day!

Hurray for Sheriff Arpaio!

The legal residents of Maricopa County and United States citizens are very thankful that we have someone who is enforcing the law - all of the laws - not just the laws that are convenient, politically popular or politcally unpopular. Selective law enforcement is not law enforcement.

Joe Arpaio has been elected and re-elected because he listens to the people who elect them. We want to be safe in our communities. And Sheriff Arpaio is working to make sure that our homes, our families and our children are safe.

Thank you, Sheriff.

Sheriff Joe is a racist and a liar. He is chomping at the bit to rid the county of browned skinned people.

I have a friend who was pulled over by a deputy for having a broken tail light. Another was pulled over for a missing hub cap.

As a tax payer, I am disappointed that the sheriff's office feels a missing hub cap is a dangerous crime and worth his time and my money.

Finally, Arpio is conducting 'selective law enforcement' by ignoring all the people with warrents and instead setting up shop in immigrant communities and stopping people as they walk down the street.

Arpio and all of his racist supporters are pathetic.

nuff said.

Mr Arpaio is looking for reelection. Everything he is doing is for propaganda purposes.
I really think that when a politician is in the same position for a long time, he becomes a dictator.
Arpaio thinks he has the power to do whatever he wants.
Same as Chavez, Idi Amin Dada, Mussolini, Hitler, Pinochet.
Can't people see this?

joe arpaio is incorrectly representing facts in this article and I am surprised and disappointed with Latino Perspectives for publishing this article without looking at accurate statistics first. I live in Maricopa County and have seen and spoken with first-hand countless Latinos and brown-skinned people who have been stopped while driving or even walking down the street by joe's deputies. Persons whom I have spoken with were citizens and stopped while driving with no cause, asked for proof they are here legally then harassed and even some cases thrown in jail until it can be proven that they are citizens. The cases of direct racial profiling are mounting, there are agencies collecting all this data and I strongly suggest Latino perspectives magazine also publish this data....

Joe also refuses to go after smugglers, drug traffickers and real criminals who are responsible for escalating kidnappings and assassinations in this county, he only pursues the maids and cooks who just want to work and feed their children, they are good people and part of our Latino family, much like our grandparents who provided for our parents so they and we could have a better life.

I have seen his "immigration round-up raids", I have seen them stopping every single brown person for made-up reasons then allowing all the lighter skinned people to pass without being harassed, even if they have a crack in the windshield or broken tail light or failed to turn on signal at the exact correct moment.

I now have a much different perspective of your magazine, since you have allowed this article... what where you thinking? Did you bother to ask real Latinos who live here about the atrocities and fear he has brought upon the Latino community in Maricopa county first?

You have lost my respect.

Arizona is in a state of turmoil, inundated by at least a half million immigrants who want to work and contribute to our economy without having to fear that they will be stopped by a Sheriff who is looking at arresting brown-skinned latinos and impounding their cars. He is a liar that cannot be trusted and someone should be investigating his sketchy past that have linked him to possible payoffs by the mafia.

Public discontent with the situation has boiled over into state policy, leading voters and lawmakers to pass some of the most hardline anti-illegal immigrant laws in the country. Hispanic leaders in our state have called for nationwide boycotts of Arizona , a tactic we do not forget when civil rights groups, more than a decade ago, went after the state when it refused to honor the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a holiday.

Compounding the tension, our Sheriff and the City of Phoenix ’s Mayor Phil Gordon are going at it in cat-fight fashion that truly is embarrassing for our state.

The June 2008 issue of Latino Perspectives printed a feature story on Sheriff Joe Arpaio slamming the Mayor for his support of the community we have embraced because of our Latino heritage.

Let’s hope our future president can abolish this racism and come up with a guest work program that will enable us to be a united state that appreciates all immigrants coming into our state for the right to work and give back positively to our community.

It is hard to believe that this man actually believes the horse feces he spews. Either he has completely deluded himself OR he thinks the public can be deluded with so much fertilizer. Every statement in this drivel contains some mis-statement, distortion, or flat out lie. Contrary to the previous comment that LATINO PERSPECTIVES shouldn't have published this, I am glad that they have so that every one can read and perceive for themselves what an incompetent megalomaniac sits in the Sheriff's office. Time to stop slinging the feces, Mr Arpaio, you're throwing it into the wind and it's sticking to you.

Sheriffs and DAs have selectively enforced laws since dinosaurs roamed the earth. Who does he think he's kidding?

Here's the deal: We Anglos invited, lured, advertised for, and sometimes bus in poor laborers to do mean, dirty work for cheap. EVERYBODY was just fine with that until the GOP suddenly started making "illegal" immigrants the new Willie Horton--Pat Buchanan, Tom Tancredo, Faux News, Lou Dobbs, Russell Pearce, and all the rest.

So I figure it has to do with the "Ownership Society"--something like, oh, I dunno, privatized prisons that are built by our tax dollars to give to wealthy cronies (like ball stadiums) and reimbursed by federal and state tax dollars on a per-prisoner basis. Duh. Like the fence, this sudden belated interest in "illegal" immigrants strikes me as just another Keep the GOP in Beemers for Life scheme paid for by you and me and the dumb shmucks who actually put these vultures in office.

It's amazing to watch sworn, self-touting heroes of capitalism throwing thousands of home-renting, house-buying, grocery-eating, goods-producing, clothes-wearing, tax-paying, Social Security contributing CONSUMERS AND THEIR FAMILIES right out of town voluntarily.

Almost as amazing as watching the home loan swindle-driven foreclosures rise, businesses slow down and close, and the school and infrastructure budgets plummet. Thanks. Great job, Brownie!

Hey, I'm one of the "We the people." Here's what *I* want: Raid Anglo neighborhoods and round up cocaine users, drug dealers, predatory swindling lenders, gas-guzzing air polluters, Mormon polygamists, corrupt legislators, office-abusing officials, high-rolling Johns, scofflaw drivers, and tax cheats with the same zest you apply to running after little, unarmed, powerless, poor brown people.

Yeah, THAT's going to happen.

Meanwhile, thank God we have a few decent people in office who can distinguish between racist re-election campaigns and the righteous prosecution of serious crime.

This idiot thinks he's an author. This column and his book.. I looked it up and found amazing similarities with "Mein Kampf"

You should look up "Mein Kampf" on Google. You'll see what I'm talking about.

Come back to post your comments after you look it up. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

This arrogant man that THINKS he is God's gift to Arizona is not only ignorant, but fooling himself.

If he were to realize that some of these "immigrant" families have been here since before he was born and unfortunately due to a "broken system" in our government have been UNABLE to complete their processing of documents,(cause it takes 20-30 years to process)he would STOP HIS laws (notice how I say His laws).

When the constitution of the United States was written All of the people who signed it into law were IMMIGRANTS.

Look up your History MR. JOE ARPIO and quit trying to make your own cause you can NEVER be a George Washington, or anyone like him. Your time is up.

HEY READERS, IT'S TIME FOR A NEW SHERIFF IN TOWN!
