STUDY LINKS PHARMACIST WORKLOAD, ERRORS

A new study by the UA College of Pharmacy showed that high workloads for pharmacists increase the risk for errors.

Researchers reviewed data submitted to insurance companies from 672 pharmacies in 18 metropolitan regions. Each pharmacist filled an average of 14.1 prescriptions per hour. The risk of dispensing potentially harmful combinations of medications that could result in a drug interaction increased by 3 percent for each additional prescription filled per hour.

Results of the study were published in the May issue of the journal Medical Care.
