Valle del Sol Names 2006 Honorees
Valle del Sol, Inc. announced at a breakfast at the Botanical Garden that actress Lynda Carter will attend the 2006 Profiles of Success luncheon as a special guest and honoree.
The annual fundraiser/awards event will be held on Sept. 8, 11:30 a.m. at the Phoenix Civic Plaza.
"Valle del Sol honors individuals from our Arizona community for their noteworthy leadership, advocacy, and service to the community," said Luz Sarmina-Gutiérrez, VDS president/CEO.
Valle del Sol and the Valley of the Sun United Way started Profiles of Success in 1991 to launch the celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month in Arizona, and to recognize the contribution of Latino leaders.
This year’s 12 honorees are: Hall of Fame: Ronnie López; Special Recognition Award: Maricopa County Superior Court presiding judge Barbara Rodríguez Mundell; Raúl Yzaguirre Community Leadership Award: Gregory E. Torrez; Exemplary Leadership: Mark E. Mazón, Paulina Vásquez Morris, and Gary Trujillo; Rosa Carrillo Torres Humanitarian Award: Gloria Sesma and Silvia Salas; Latino Advocacy Champion Award: Frank Q. Carrillo; Latino Achievement in Health & Science: Dr. Norberto Adame; Manuel Ortega Youth Leadership Award: Ryan Riedel; and Latino Achievement in Arts & Literature: Lynda Carter.

SOLLEY NAMED PRESIDENT
Rufus Glasper, Maricopa County Community College District chancellor, has appointed Anna Solley as president of Phoenix College.
In January 2005, Solley was appointed acting president of Phoenix College. Prior to serving as president, she spent four years in the role of vice chancellor for academic affairs in the Maricopa Community College District Office. Solley holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in special education, and a doctorate in higher and adult education from Arizona State University.

PCC PICKS PRESIDENT
Pima Community College has appointed Sylvia M. Lee as a district president, Northeast Campus.
She is the first PCC graduate to serve in that position. Lee was PCC’s East Campus dean of instruction. She has been employed with the district since 1996. She earned her undergraduate degree in psychology and master’s degree in education from the University of Arizona, and received a doctorate from Arizona State University. Leija on Youngtown Council
The Youngtown Town Council swore in appointee Michael Leija on May 12. Leija, 40, was appointed to the council vacancy created when Vice Mayor Janice Beck died Feb. 1. For more, call (623) 933-8286.
John C. Lincoln Hospital Names Honorees
John C. Lincoln has named its annual Physicians of the Year for 2006. Family physician Mark Cerato, D.O. from Deer Valley Family Medicine was named 2006 Physician of the Year from the health network’s medical practices. John C. Lincoln Deer Valley Hospital emergency physician Clark York, D.O., and John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital internal medicine specialist Frank Peralta, M.D. were named from their respective hospital medical staffs. This is the fourth year that Physicians of the Year have been named for each of John C. Lincoln’s hospitals. For more, call (602) 870-6309.
DUO WIN AWARD
Stephen Ochoa and Jeffrey Kaiserman, creators and owners of Frost, A Gelato Shoppe, 7131 N. Oracle Rd., Tucson, are the first recipients of the University of Arizona’s McGuire Center’s Emergent Entrepreneur’s Award. It celebrates dynamic, visionary entrepreneurs on the rise. Ochoa and Kaiserman, UofA alumni, developed the idea for the gelateria while traveling in Italy. The two returned to the U.S., developed a business plan, studied at Gelato University, imported the Italian equipment needed, and launched their company in May 2005.
