Summer is a good time to check out art exhibitions at the various galleries in the Valley. It’s cool indoors and many talented local artists have their work on display.
At the Tempe Public Library Second Floor Gallery, 3500 S. Rural Road and at the Edna Vihel Center for the Arts, 3340 S. Rural Road, the city of Tempe is presenting the Hispanic Research Center’s exhibition Identity/Identidad, selected works of some of the most talented Chicano/a artists in the United States. It runs through Oct. 16.
The exhibition, from Arizona State University’s Hispanic Research Center collection, features 20 works on paper, primarily serigraphs and lithographs with themes common in Chicano/a art, such as family, community, immigration, bi-culture, spirituality, and cultural symbols. The artists featured represent five of the states in the Southwest with large and growing Latina/o populations and vibrant arts communities.
Participating artists: Daniel Martin Diaz, Tucson; Vincent Valdez, Santiago Pérez, Joe L. López, San Antonio; Laura López Cano, Seabrook, Texas; Monica Aissa Martinez, El Paso; Xavier Garza, Rio Grande City, Texas; Quentin González, Laredo, Texas; Celina Hinojosa, Brownsville, Texas; Santa Barraza, Kingsville, Texas; Carlos Santiestevan, Denver; Felix López, Gilman, Colo.; Martin Moreno, Adrian, Mich.; Frank Romero, Los Angeles; Ester Hernández, Dinuba, Calif.; Malaquías Montoya, Albuquerque; Alma López, Los Mochis, Mexico; and Cristina Cárdenas, Guadalajara, Mexico.
The HRC archives include the largest collection of artwork and images by U.S. Latinas/os. Growing out of this archive, the HRC has created four award-winning art books, a DVD, an interview series with Chicano/a artists and an international Latina/o arts festival.
