Title: Supervisory Special Agent, Phoenix Division, Federal Bureau of Investigation

Years of service: 27 (22 as an FBI Agent, 5 as a police officer)

Honors and recognition: Graduated from the Police Training Academy in 1982, Manhattan, Kan. Graduated from Kansas State University in 1987, Bachelor of Science degree; received an appointment and graduated from the FBI Academy in 1987.

Inherent dangers you face: “As law enforcement officers we face all sorts of dangers; some more obvious than others, but all of us know this is part of the job. Being an FBI agent has always given me a great sense of confidence, satisfaction and pride. Part of that comes from the FBI’s ability to professionally train its personnel. Short of the Armed Forces, I don’t think there is an agency in the United States who better prepares its personnel to face the inherent dangers associated with the profession.”

Proudest moments: “Getting married to the best person I have ever known. Proud of my children and being a part of their lives as they grow up. Helping others. Being deployed to Iraq as an FBI agent to help the U.S. Military.”

Mentors along the way: “God, my parents, my family; they have always been there no matter what.”

On balancing work and family: “I’ve never had big issues balancing work and family. In my mind my family has and will always come first, but my family knows that being a Special Agent with the FBI is very demanding and time consuming. My family has always told me that they are proud of what I do. They have never questioned the time I have spent away from them doing my job. As my daughter once said, ‘When I see you go to work it makes me feel safe.’”

Greatest satisfaction of your job: “Knowing that I have worked with and currently work alongside other men and women who are true professionals and are proud of helping others.”

Advice to other Latinos/Latinas: “Pursue a college education, concentrate and don’t let anything stop you. Don’t ever let anyone put you down. Do your best no matter what the task is, knowing that it will be difficult along the way. In the end you might realize a dream. My college experience was not an easy one, but I finished and I was very proud when I did. It gave me the opportunity to realize my goal of becoming an FBI agent. Looking back after 22 years of service I would not have done it any other way.” Text Box:

Language skills pay off

“I began my law enforcement career as a patrol officer for the Riley County (Kan.) Police Department in 1982. As the only Spanish speaker on the department at the time, I had the opportunity to work undercover on several occasions. I also had the opportunity to work with the bomb technicians and eventually became a member to the newly established Riley County SWAT Team in 1983. I had the opportunity to work alongside the Secret Service when President Ronald Reagan visited the Kansas State campus. It was a very proud moment for me and one I will never forget. Seeing President Reagan and meeting some of the professionals on his staff helped me decide to finish my college education and go into federal service.”
