Latinas on the move

Now that Sen. Hillary Clinton has conceded the Democratic presidential nomination to Sen. Barack Obama, Latinas who worked on her campaign are turning their commitment to other causes. When the former First Lady campaigns together with Obama to try to install a Democrat in the White House, she will run into a very familiar Latina face. Obama has hired Patti Solis Doyle, her former campaign manager to try to win two types of voters: Latinos and women.

Solis Doyle was fired by Clinton and blamed for strategy mistakes in the early primaries. She will be chief of staff to Obama’s vice presidential running mate.

In addition, Monica Perez, who grew up in Arizona and was Clinton’s regional campaign director for Nevada, will be headed to Washington.

Monica tells Latino Perspectives that she’ll be running a state-wide campaign for the Service Employees International Union in Virginia. “This is a very exciting (and far) move for me, but a city I’ve always wanted to be in for more than a few days, and yet another state to explore personally and professionally,” Perez says. Just two of the many strong Latinas we know who are surging to lead our political onda.
