Hitting The Heights

In the Heights has hit, well, the heights of Broadway prizes. Heights won a Tony for Best Musical last month. That’s a feat, considering few Latino musicals ever made it to Broadway (West Side Story wasn’t Latino, lo siento). Luis Valdez’s Zoot Suit and Paul Simon’s The Capeman both bombed at the box office. In the Heights was nominated for 13 Tonys. Definitely worth a trip to the Big Apple. The setting is the heavily Puerto Rican Washington Heights neighborhood. The hip-hopish music and lyrics are by Lin-Manuel Miranda, who also stars as bodega operator Usnavi in the musical. You see the hit number “96,000” from the show at www.broadway.com . You can buy Height’s hot tickets at the same site. You can listen to the hit songs on a new CD out this month. And if you go, give our saludos to Broadway.
