Sky Harbor room provides R&R for military

A peaceful harbor for soldiers

The flag featured in the display case at the Military and Veterans Hospitality Room at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has a short but proud history.

The stars and stripes are the memorial flag for late soldier David L. Cordova, husband of MVHR volunteer Mary Cordova of Phoenix.

While visiting the hospitality room, Marine Captain Kevin M. Brown noticed a empty flag case and offered to fly a flag on a mission and return it for display.

“We sent David Cordova’s Memorial flag to Captain Brown, who along with his Co-Pilot Marine Captain Aaron E. Milroy, flew the flag aboard a U.S. Marine Corps AH-1W ‘Super Cobra’ helicopter during a close air support combat mission over Iraq on April 19, 2007, during Operation Iraqi Freedom,” says executive director Anne Theodosis.

Although the Military and Veterans Hospitality Room at Terminal 2 opened in 2006, it’s still virtually unknown by most Valley residents. To date, 9,020 men and women in uniform have found their way there. The room came about through the Phoenix Military & Veterans Commission.

For those who serve our country, the room’s a respite from long waits and layovers at the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The airport’s free Inter-Terminal buses whisk service members to Terminal 2.

The Military and Veterans Hospitality Room, run solely on private donations, is designed to be as homey as possible. Set up like a nice apartment, there’s a living room, a library, big screen TV room with recliners, computers, a game room and a small kitchenette.

And because the Hospitality Room is located before the TSA security checkpoint, family members can join the service men and women. A children’s playroom is also available.

“Everything in here – furniture, food, sodas, has come from donations,” Theodosis says, pointing out game tables donated by the Phoenix Sky Harbor Police Bureau in commemoration of one of their officer’s sons – Corporal Christopher Lapka, who died in Iraq in 2004.
