Latino Councilman Adam Diaz lends name to center
Westside Senior Center gets a new title
In addition, the dining room at the senior center at 4115 West Thomas Rd., was named in honor of Officer David Uribe. Uribe was shot and killed in 2005 while conducting a traffic stop in west Phoenix.
Uribe’s name also was nominated to re-name the center, formerly the Westside Senior Center, and will appear on the center’s main gathering place as a compromise.
The designation was approved the Phoenix City Council on April 10. Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, Councilman Tom Simplot and state Rep. John Nelson attended the June 6 re-naming ceremony.
A nomination to rename the center after Diaz was submitted to the Heritage Commission in November. After one public meeting and two public hearings, the Heritage Commission recommended Diaz based on his numerous contributions as a community leader and public servant.
“This honor is long overdue, given the accomplishments, commitment and passion Adam Diaz has given to the city for nearly a century,” said District 4 City Councilman Simplot.
