'CBS 5 News' tops tv competition

Catherine Anaya and her co-workers at KPHO, CBS 5 News happily celebrated reaching the pinnacle of Valley news during the May Nielsen sweeps.

"We are all every excited about it, and this truly was a team effort," says the Latina TV news anchor and columnist for Latino Perspectives Magazine.

CBS 5 toppled long-time news leader KPNX, 12 News in the May ratings with wins at 10 p.m. and noon. Channel 12, owned by the Gannett Co., had perched at the top of the late-night ratings for 11 years.

Market observers say Meredith Corp.-owned KPHO’s strong strategic moves to accomplish that feat included installing Anaya as evening news anchor and hiring away veteran journalist Kent Dana from KPNX.
