STATE LOTTERY ACQUIRES NEW DIRECTOR
Art Macias, Jr. was appointed executive director of the Arizona Lottery in November 2005 by Gov. Janet Napolitano. Prior to this appointment, he had served as the Governor's Director of the Arizona Department of Weights and Measures since July 2003.
As director of the Lottery, Macias heads an agency that operates entirely from the revenue it generates; it receives no general funds from the state. Since July 1981, the Arizona Lottery has returned more than $1.8 billion in net profit to the state. Lottery sales fund public projects and programs such as arts, wildlife, parks, public transportation, roads and historic preservation in cities and towns throughout Arizona.
Prior to joining state government, Macias served for seven years as the Director of the Community and Economic Development Department of the City of Douglas on the U.S.-Mexico border in southeastern Arizona. Macias' binational and bicultural background was vital in coordinating communications and leading projects that spanned the international border between the U.S. and Mexico.
Macias holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Brandeis University. He completed a French Master's in International Management from the Ecole Superieure des Sciences Economiques et Commerciales (ESSEC) in Paris, France as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar.
He also serves as a member of the board of directors of the Border Trade Alliance, a non-profit organization that advocates on behalf of policies and initiatives designed to improve border affairs and trade relations among the NAFTA nations. Macias is a member of the Arizona-Mexico Commission, the National Conference on Weights and Measures and sits on the board of directors of the Arizona Latino Research Enterprise and the University of Arizona South Foundation.
VALLEY AD PROS JUDGE ENTRIES
Members of the Phoenix Ad Club participated in the 2006 New York Festival's Advertising and Marketing Effectiveness (AME) Awards as creative directors and advertising agency executives judged international entries for the annual contest. AME Awards are given for excellence in effective and creative communications.
Leonardo Torrescando, principal and creative director of Urias Torrescando Advertising and PR organized the creative team.
"It's important for us to participate in judging the entries and to establish links with our own world-class ad agencies with groups like the New Festival's AME Awards," Torrescando says.
Judges from around the globe, including those from such agencies as Ogilvy, McCann and Tokyo's TANAKAPlus, viewed 40 entries from agencies in New York, South America, San Francisco, Japan, Europe, Canada and elsewhere.
