Teacher, students earn honor
Recent honors with the Motivate y EdĂșcate College Scholarship and Teacher Recognition awards
Two high school students and one teacher were recently honored with the Motivate y Edúcate College Scholarship and Teacher Recognition awards.
Given by the Pepsi Bottling Group, award winners have demonstrated a motivation to educate and succeed, regardless of the obstacles.
Scholarship winners Ivette Fernandez, from Westview High School, and Eduardo Rivera, from Central High School, have managed to excel academically and are determined to earn their college degrees despite personal and/or financial obstacles. Ivette wishes to pursue a career in international business, and Eduardo holds a job during the week to help support his family. Both plan to attend Arizona State University this fall; each received $2,500.
Monika Nathan, a counselor and substitute teacher from West Phoenix High School, was selected for her ability to inspire Latino students. An African American, Nathan's fluency in Spanish helps her bridge cultural gaps, particularly with her students and their families who are recent immigrants. Nathan was awarded $1,000.
