District board sends DREAM resolution to D.C.
A local governing body passes resolution asking Congress to pass DREAM Act
The Phoenix Union High School Board became the first district governing body in Arizona to pass a resolution asking Congress to pass the DREAM Act.
The resolution passed by a unanimous vote by the board members. A letter from the board to Arizona's congressional delegation will ask that they support legislation for the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act.
The resolution's purpose is to send a message to district students, says Steve Gallardo, PUHSD board member. Board members worry that high school students who are undocumented will lose heart and drop out because they can't attend college.
One part of the resolution reads, "The enactment of the DREAM Act would serve as immediate motivation to all of the undocumented students enrolled in the Phoenix Union High School District to stay in school, achieve success on the AIMS test, and obtain good grades in order to quality for legal residency status.."
"We hope our action stirs our members of Congress to act to help the undocumented students Proposition 300 affects," Gallardo says.
