Artist's 'Frenzy' broadens to sculpture of Chavez

Zarco Guerrero's latest project is a DVD of his one-man play, Face to Face in a Frenzy

Zarco Guerrero continues to be one of the most prolific Chicano artists in Arizona. His latest projects include a mass-produced DVD of his one-man play, Face to Face in a Frenzy, and a lifesize bronze of Cesar Chavez for a border town.

In his solo theater, Guerrero dons the masks and assumes the characters of multicultural archetypes such as La Comadre, El Vato Poeta, El Viejo, and the Scottsdale Rich Woman. A curriculum for teachers and students accompany the video.

Tony Amendola, the Chicano art collector who is financing the DVD project, says he plans to distribute Face to Face in schools and libraries. The disc also contains interviews and footage of Guerrero's creative process. (For more information, contact Amendola at www.face2facefrenzy.net.)

Zarco's bronze of Chavez will be installed in a plaza in San Luis Rio Colorado, near Yuma, on March 31 to commemorate the late civil rights activist's birthday. Chavez was born in the Yuma area.

"This particular piece is my contribution to the Movimento," Guerrero says. The Chicano civil rights movement during the '60s and '70s inspired Zarco to produce this art. He adds a Fiberglas copy of the statue will be displayed in schools and community centers.
