Arizona was the fastest-growing state in 2006, according to the Census Bureau. It is ranked seventh in largest Hispanic population.

From 2000 to 2020, the population of White Arizonans will grow 5 percent; Latinos will grow 68 percent.

Latinos in Arizona are economically upwardly mobile, and own 35,000 businesses in the state. Hispanics are increasingly middle class, with a median per-person income of $32,997.

Recent surveys show that Hispanic residents and voters are most concerned about education and jobs, followed by homeland security and the environment.

Education attainment and resultant incomes are rising, particularly among the second and third generations. About 84 percent of native-born Hispanics have a high school diploma, while 22 percent of the Hispanic second generation have earned a bachelor's degree or higher. Hispanic students have dominated enrollment growth in state K-12 schools, accounting for 63 percent since 1996.

Politically, 56 percent of eligible Hispanic Arizonans are registered to vote, with 47 percent turning out for the 2004 presidential election, In comparison, 60 percent of Whites voted. These numbers are predicted to grow as grassroots voter registration projects target the burgeoning demographic of younger, unregistered Latinos.

Hispanic families have more children than any other state population segment, which leads to bigger buys of food, clothing and medicines.

According to Datos 2006, ".many observers have concluded that what happens among the state's Hispanic residents and businesses will shape Arizona as a whole."
