Luis A. Salazar, AIA
Principal architect - Salazar Associates Architects, Ltd.
Luis Salazar graduated in 1971 from Arizona State University with a bachelor's degree in architecture. As a Peace Corp volunteer he served as area architect in Sierra Leone, West Africa. The experience has impacted his long career, giving him a keen sense of the environment and the compatible integration of materials he uses.
A: It started when I was in the sixth grade and continues today. What I thought architecture was and is, has changed many times but basically I love the part of being able to design space that is exciting and makes people aware of that space
A: The people of Sierra Leone were always happy even though they had very little. This was in 1969 to 1971. As you probably know things have changed there since then.
A: By far the green movement, sustainability, is talked about in every project and has become a world movement.
A: In Arizona, cities thinking that by placing lots of trees on a commercial project constitutes good design, regardless of the drought this state has been in for the last 12 years.
A: Two come to mind: The 12th Street Office Building at 4450 N. 12th St. and a contemporary home in Gainesville Florida.
A: In town, Taliesen West by Frank Lloyd Wright; elsewhere, Salt Institute in La Jolla, Calif. by Louis Kahn.
A: Varies depending on my mood that day but mostly opera, nouveau flamenco, Oldies of the '60s, '70s, and '80s.
