UA study links spice to arthritis treatment
Turmeric may prevent rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis
A recent study completed at the University of Arizona College of Medicine found that turmeric, an ancient spice used in traditional Asian medicine, may prevent both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis.
Distinguished by the yellow color it lends to curries and other dishes, turmeric has been used for centuries to treat inflammatory disorders. The extract contains curcumin which is marketed widely in the Western world as a dietary supplement for the treatment and prevention of a variety of disorders, including arthritis.
An article on the study, Efficacy and Mechanism of Action of Turmeric Supplements in the Treatment of Experimental Arthritis, appears in the online issue of "Arthritis and Rheumatism."
