Band carries ‘Torch’ for Southern rock
Honeytribe
The younger generation of blues-infused Southern rock arrives Aug. 5 for a concert at the Rhythm Room in the form of Honeytribe, led by Devon Allman, the son of Greg Allman and nephew to Duane Allman.
The band released Torch a year ago to blues critics’ acclaim. Among members of the band (drummer Mark Oyarzabal, bassist George Potsos, Hammond B3 organist Jack Kirchner) is multi-instrumentalist and Juilliard grad Pedro Arévalo, who plays dobro, contrabass, steel pan, Hawaiian guitar, the West African ngoni, the Moroccan sintir, the Puerto Rican cuatro, and of course, bass and guitar.
This promises to be an interesting show, as Honeytribe was re-formed only two years ago after Allman took a family break and a short stint as lead vocalist for the Vargas Blues Band’s Love Union Peace CD. (VBB’s founder, Javier Vargas, is known for his fiery blues guitar work.) One of those tracks, How Verso Are You, rose to No. 3 in Spain in summer 2005; Toyota also used it to promote its Verso model.
