Twist on tradition

Quinceañera, an indie feature film that won awards at the Sundance Film Festival, is set for an early August release either at movie houses or on cable TV. The setting is L.A.’s Echo Park, and stars newcomer Emily Rios as the 15-year-old who gets pregnant just before her coming-of-age ceremony, with actor Jessie Garcia as her gay brother. Critics are saying the film of urban Chicano life by two White directors has enough universality and quality to become a surprise cross-over sensation a la My Big Fat Greek Wedding.
