The story of young Magdiel, a fisherman and aspiring songwriter who trades a corrido for the chance to cross the border, is told in director Natalia Almada’s Al Otro Lado. Showing Aug. 1 on KAET-TV’s POV series at 10 p.m., the documentary is infused throughout with corridos about drug smuggling and illegal immigration trade. Al Otro Lado was screened at New York’s Tribeca Film Festival and was shown at the Museum of Modern Art.

Also to be seen in KAET’s Arizona Stories is Gilbert Duran Orrantia. The son of a smelter worker in Clarkdale, Orrantia enlisted in the Army Air Corps to train as a World War II pilot. Orrantia’s story originally was told in local author Rudy Villareal’s Arizona Hispanic Flyboys 1941 – 1945. The show is scheduled to air at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 29.
