It’s OK to wig out

Anna Marie Gutierrez thinks it’s okay to “wig out” once in a while, as long as she has a hand in it. The 30-something entrepreneur has been peddling wigs online at shopdevious.com for more than 10 years and recently opened Devious Wigs & Things, a funky boutique on Grand Avenue next to the historic Bragg’s Pie Factory building.
Gutierrez decided to peddle wigs after a not-so-pleasant shopping experience when the natural brunette wanted to see how she looked as a blonde. After being asked so many times where she got her new do, a career was launched.
She likes how wigs give you a creative outlet without causing permanent damage and how they let you channel your inner rock star. She playfully notes that, “everyone wants to talk to the girl in the hot pink wig.” She does feel that wigs are more than just a costume item – they allow you to cover hair loss while being creative and fashionable.
Along with quality synthetic wigs that are both manageable and shiny, Devious Wigs also specializes in eyelashes that can be natural, glitter or even more adventurous such as faux fur and faux feather. If you like to change the streaks in your hair regularly, Gutierrez makes that easy with color hair strips that she either designs or imports.
The “things” in Devious Wigs & Things include accessories, vintage clothing for men and women, and assorted antique and gently used home furnishings.
Wigs and other quirky items are not all Gutierrez offers up to the community, however. Every third Saturday, the shop sponsors a clothes swap for people interested in trading in their clothing and accessories for new items that others may bring in. Are you cleaning out your closet and looking for new things but on a budget? Simply bring in items in good condition and take home someone else’s treasures. As Gutierrez puts it, “Think of it like a big yard sale, except free.” But leave the chonies at home!
If that’s not enough, how about a good ole’ fashion gong show? That’s what you’ll find on the second Wednesday evening of every month. “Devious Gong” features store manager Joe Carillo as gong master and is hosted by Blueford J. Petticoat, who dresses like a clown.
Gutierrez refers to fashion as a “canvas for self expression” and she certainly is doing her part to make that a reality, and all at a good price. She wants to keep prices low and friendly for the neighborhood with most of her vintage items under $20.
