A new Latino-targeted Web portal in the works

Buzz en el calle is that the Arizona Republic and sister TV station Channel 12 KPNX are secretly designing a Web site portal aimed at local Latinos.
(Mistake Numero Uno – you can’t keep secrets from chismoso Valley Latinos.)

You may remember – or not – ¡Extra!, the special edition in the Republic supposedly designed to appeal to Latino readers. Gannett management (based out of McLean, Virgina) killed the section a couple of years ago for the usual Gannett reasons – the section was not generating enough advertising to keep it breathing. Nor was Latino reader response overwhelming. However, interest be damned, the country’s largest media chain sees the growth numbers in the Phoenix market Latino buying power and because their earnings and newspaper circulation is falling, the Gannettoids sent here from other newspapers are determined to bite a chunk of that economic tamale.

Why don’t we resident Latinos give the Gannett news masterminds some ideas from our very fertile Hispanic imaginations? Anybody out there want to suggest a cute name or two for the new Web site? Like, maybe, RealLatino.com, or Everythingyoueverwannaknow aboutLatinos.com. Send in your suggestion to news@latinopm.com  and we’ll publish some of the best.
